Nastya Mineral and Boris Lesnoy formed Calabi-Yau in Moscow at the end of 2020. A prominent artist on the local and international sub-underground scene - Nastya Mineral - is well-known for her contribution to the key Moscow free improv & punk acts such as Asian Woman On The Telephone (AWOTT), Punk Fraction Of The Red Brigades, Mikhail Mineral and more. Boris Lesnoy vice versa has emerged from the world of modern composition and tends toward the academic means of composing and directing. His main project, Phonema Choir, operates as a collective workshop whose participants are engaged in the development of phonetic formulas, spectral studies of phonemic landscapes, and work with particular acoustic spaces, and architecture of sound.
As you'd expect from such an equivocal alliance, Calabi-Yau's self-titled debut album sounds diverse and messy, blending a unique fusion of free improvisation, free jazz, automated drum rhythms, and concrete poetry. Nastya Mineral plays tenor saxophone, Boris Lesnoy holds clarinet, while wielding mesmerizing rhythms and gurgling synths alongside, - shortly, a minimal kit that you can put in a bag and take to a country house to improvise for a weekend long.
"At that time, I was hatching the idea of founding a particular chamber ensemble and invited Nastya to join with tenor saxophone, and so I grabbed the clarinet. We played some sketches and etudes that I came up with, inspired by my composition studies with maestro Vladimir Gorlinsky. We believe there is too much of the accidental in the field of experimental music nowadays, so we paid attention to formal developments and structures. At the same time, electronics and rhythm sections in each piece mostly remain motionless like musical sculptures, so the wind section comments on these sculptures. That is the way we construct musical forms. We move away from self-expression but pursue music that surprises us. The tenor saxophone and clarinet are like a dragon and a snake dancing in electric landscapes. We are both jazz devotees, but at the same time, we revere the heritage of the 20th-century avant-garde. For example, Edgard Varèse's ideas of sonority and expressiveness. On the album, we got a lot of microtonal chromaticism and risky counterpoints. But at the same time, pop primitivism often comes through, just because we are eager amateurs first of all. We love it when music catches and encourages", - tells Boris Lensoy about the creation of the album.
The debut album of Calabi-Yau is a new word in the field of Russian experiment al music. It seems that the emphasis on these compositions is in two places at the same time - in the proper and the wrong. This manifestation of musical freedom gives us a tremendous spectrum for interpretation. For some, this album may seem like a heaped-up post-jazz opus, but for others it may rather appear as an intellectual madness with charisma that captivates in the very first seconds.
This monumental recording, created behind the Iron Curtain in the perestroika era, combines minimalism, drone music and improvisation based on electrified violins and amplified household objects, showcasing a Ukrainian violinist’s extraordinary creativity.
